Difference between forgings and castings

Castings and forgings are commonly used methods in metal manufacturing processes, and their differences mainly lie in their processing principles and properties.

First of all, the casting is the molten metal or alloy through the casting molding process, with the mold or model in the container or mold into the molten metal, after cooling, solidification, cleaning, processing and other processes to obtain the finished product. The forging is to place the metal blank in the mold or mechanical equipment, apply greater pressure and force, and deform the metal raw material and transform it into a workpiece with a certain shape through deformation and plasticity.

Secondly, in terms of physical properties, castings are usually more fragile and uneven than forgings, because overhead voids and non-metallic inclusions in casting can reduce the mechanical properties of the material. The forgings have higher density and densification, the internal grain structure is more compact, and the strength, hardness and toughness are more uniform, which is conducive to the use of various mechanical parts and high load and high strength working conditions.

In general, the choice of castings and forgings depends on factors such as the shape, size, material type and requirements of the required workpiece, as well as the cost and feasibility of the production process.
